DESIGN TRENDS FOR A NEW DECADE // HELLO 2020

Hey everyone, let me introduce myself! My name is Taelin Howes and I am the Design Technologist with Trademark Homes. Crazy to think that I have been on the team for a whole year this month. Although I am typically more comfortable to stay behind the scenes working with our clients. This year you will see me stepping out of my comfort zone and sharing more about interior design. Gotta love when we are pushed to grow and do things that are scary, ha!

Everyone likes to make predictions in January on what we will see in the coming year. In design school everyone would be excited to see what the new Pantone Colour of The Year would be (which currently is Classic Blue, by the way) so I thought I would share some predictions on what I see happening in 2020 design wise. Now remember, these are just prediction. Everyone has their own design style and that is ok - there really is no right or wrong when it comes to design. Ultimately design can be whatever makes you happy and inspired.

Here are some things that I think we will see more of in 2020.

Muted Pastels

Gone are the days of boring neutrals. In 2020 we will see subtle pops of colour to monochromatic rooms. We aren’t talking about rooms designed by Lisa Frank (come on, who didn’t love those notebooks) but a more mature play on adding fun colour to designs.

Dark Wood Accents

I don’t necessarily think we will see the dark oak/maple trim or espresso/cappuccino cabinets coming back (sorry to those who had this design in 2010). I am referring to adding wood accents to areas such as a statement island in the Kitchen, a dark fireplace mantle or custom millwork. I think you will see these dark accents paired with white walls. In 2018 + 2019 we saw the trend of white on white and we will gradually see people adding a little warmth back to their spaces through the addition of dark wood tones.

Good Bye Cool Greys, Hello Warm Greys

This may pertain more to our local market since we have such long and gloomy winters. So, if you live in the tropics this one you may disagree with. But, in Saskatchewan there is nothing worse than your home not being inspiring all year round. Many magazines and publications feature homes with cool greys that look great, but here I think we will see people desiring to have a cozier feel to their room and with that will bring warmer grey tones in our paint and decor selections.

Mixed Textures

You have heard it before - it’s okay to mix and match. Don’t be afraid to mix together wood, metal, fabric, even wall details when designing a room. Branch outside your normal design box as this year will be all about incorporating things into a design that speak to you. Keep in mind, there is a happy medium when it comes to mixing textures together - be mindful of patterns and busier prints because you don’t want things fighting to be the focal point in a room.

Separated Space

Over the past decades we have seen homes become more open concept. Decades ago homes were made up of smaller rooms that were closed off from one another. Today we have seen the design pendulum swing and homes are often one giant space with minimal hallways. Over the next few years we will see separated spaces come back but not always done by fulling closing rooms off from one another. Separated spaces will be made through the use of interesting wall partitions , sliding doors, and even simple ceilings details which set rooms apart. In some cases we do see clients seeking the more traditional layouts. I don’t think we will be going back to the older layouts anytime soon.

So as we welcome a new decade and get excited about new design options may we remember that no matter what trends come this year it’s always important that we follow our hearts and incorporate pieces and styles that truly express ones true self. Use 2020 to be the year that you design rooms that make you smile and you feel proud to call home.
